FINDING YOUR BIRTH MOTHER

If I am offered the full service how long will a full search take?
As most of the work will have been done in the assessment, completing and ordering the documents to evidence the findings takes 3-4 weeks.

What happens during the search?
Your birth family will be unaware of the search so that you can decide what you would like to do at the end of the search. A personal researcher will be allocated to you and will send regular updates on the progress of the search.  You can ask any questions of your researcher at any time. Your researcher is there for you every step of the way.

What is a successful search?

The full search service is considered successful when the one of the following is met:

  • The named birth relative is found and a current name and address is given in a full report
  • The named birth relative has passed away and a final resting place/or death certificate has been found/or the relative who registered the death has been located
  • A third party who can contact the named birth relative via an intermediary has been found e.g in the event of emigration

What if my birth mother has passed away?

If this should be the case we would be able to tell you the final resting place and search for any relative that registered the death

What happens when you have found my birth mother?

You will be sent a full report containing your birth mother's current name and address. We will also be able to advise and discuss with you the option of using our intermediary service. You may wish to keep the information for yourself and not make contact with your birth mother. It is your choice at the end of the search and your birth mother will not be made aware of the search.

What do I get at the end of the search?
A full report detailing all the work carried out, the current name and address of your birth relative (or final resting place and the name of the relative that registered the death) along with supporting documentation to confirm the positive identity of your birth relative.

How do I make contact with my birth family?

UKATS offer a full intermediary service by a registered and experienced adoption intermediary. Contact will be made on your behalf, with full support and help in reunion. If you decide not to use  an intermediary we can also advice on a basic letter. However, using an intermediary is strongly recommended.

What do I need to do now?

Send us an email or fill out the Enquiry Form. We will then respond via email and ask you for further details.

Searching for Adopted Adults

UKATS work with other organisations, such as social services, in searching for adopted adults and under a non-disclosure agreement. I can carry out the search work on their behalf. I am happy to advise you on the process of trying to contact an adopted adult via your local social services.
